Finally arrived at Karatsu, island of Kyushu. Kasumi immediately visited a few galleries, private and government run artists' outlet. Kasumi picks to inspects a few pottery while the staff anxiously watched. Prices range from $50 to $5,000 for a medium size jar (approx. 15"h x 13"w).
"I know, I'm not supposed to pick them up, but I have to know the weight and feel while trying to determine the thickness of the pots."
Most of the pieces are functional and wood fired. Function seems to be the priority while the shapes and glazes are distinct enough to give it strong personality.
